Perfection Leads to Failure

Sean wakes up one Monday morning to perform his normal routine. He gets out of bed, he brushes his teeth, prepares his coffee and packs his lunch. Off he is to work as he rushes through traffic to get to the plantation right on time.

Actually, Sean is more determined than anyone else to make it to work, so he prefers to arrive 30 mins ahead of everyone else.

He turns his laptop on, checks his emails and notices that the project he was working on this past weekend actually isn't due for another week.

Sean laughs to himself and says: "Well, I'm not too worried about, at least it's out of the way. Perhaps the Boss will see such a good job that I've done that he'll want to promote me."

Wednesday comes around and it's time for the weekly meeting.

The project is the topic of discussion and the Client decides to scrap the whole thing.

Sean - feeling alarmed, cries out "But I just completed the project this past weekend! We spent an entire month going over the specifics, why are we deciding not to continue with it!?"

The Client says: "We just don't have the budget to go through with the project. Some things came up and we have to redirect funds for another venture."

There's an awkward silence and everyone can tell that Sean is pissed off. After all, he spent 30 hours on this project - forsaking time that might have been spent with his wife and kids.

Sean realized something.

He was trying to be perfect by hitting deadlines prematurely. Sean is the kind of guy that pours his entire soul into his job.

He wants to be noticed.

He wants to be appreciated.

Then one day, Sean's Boss walks into his office and says: "Sean, sorry but we're going to have to let you go. The Client wasn't too happy with that little outburst you made. And they're demanding that we either fire you or they will leave us for a competitor."

Sean's reality crumbled before him.

He realized that he was only an expense that could be tossed away like dirty underwear at any given time.

Sean gave his Boss the finger and walked out.

Moral of the Story

Sean was trying to be perfect in everything he did in life.

To him, he didn't want to let other people down. And he sure as hell didn't want to let himself down either.

You see, Sean grew up thinking that the entire world was against him.

Apparently, no one could understand him. No one listened to him.

Sean thought that he could get respect and feel appreciated if he sought to be perfect in everything he did.

But what Sean didn't realize was that this drive to be perfect was burning him out. Additionally, this drive of his caused him to lose his job.

Mistakes Are Better Than Perfection

Life is all about making mistakes.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the drive to outperform. That wasn't Sean's problem.

His problem was that he had a ton of baggage from his past that was causing him to reinforce destructive patterns. The outcome? Chasing perfection.

Sean had to do some introspection of his soul. He had to find the root cause for this drive of wanting to be perfection.

Instead of waking up and immediately starting his routines, he instead just laid in bed and starting thinking about his life. What he wanted to do and where he wanted to be.

Sean learned to practice mindfulness and intent. Every morning he would set intent on his goals, and when things would start to bother him, he would remember to be mindful of his thoughts.

Sean's character began to improve and he learned his own worth. Sean then went on to start a business and eventually started making $10k a month. His ability to overcome his problems and to re-direct his drive into something meaningful allowed him to climb the ladder of success.

How Can I Help?

Many of you probably see yourselves in Sean.

Sometimes, we don’t have access to the right information or the right people to help show us the way. Sean certainly didn’t have that. He had to look for it and find someone that was truly willing to help.

I offer such services. My goal is to provide you a system that can be used to bring out your very best.

  • I work with people 1-1
  • We create a plan that is designed to be actionable every week
  • You learn skills that will help you become more aware of yourself (thoughts, actions, etc)
  • You will learn how to journal these things
  • You will learn how to balance motivation and discipline

Be like Sean and stop chasing perfection.

It’s okay to make mistakes. Just make sure that you learn from them. Mistakes are what helps a person reach perfection. But trying to be perfect is what leads to mistakes.
